FFA students earn state farmer degree

Calexico FFA tops list

Nine Calexico FFA students were honored with the prestigious Golden State degree, the state farmer degree, on March 16 at a regional FFA banquet at Sonora High School in La Habra.

The state farmer degree is the highest award attained by FFA members from the state association. Calexico had the highest amount of recipients in the Imperial Valley and third overall in the southern region behind Jurupa Valley and El Capitan FFAs. Thirty-nine of 66 FFA chapters from the southern region earned the honor.

Esmeralda Aguilera, Karla Wong, Sergio Almada, Luisa Ledezma, Daniela Davila, Eduardo Mercado, Carl Santiago, Roxanne Espinoza and Christian Ortiz earned the honor.

Karla qualified as a finalist for a state FFA scholarship. She will go before the selection committee in April for the $10,000 award.

Other FFA chapter recipients included: Holtville, eight; Calipatria, seven; Imperial, five; Brawley, two; Winterhaven, one; Southwest/El Centro, one.
