Holtville falters in tourney

COACHELLA — The Holtville High baseball team kicked off play in the Coachella Tournament here Monday by falling 8-5 to host team Coachella.

Holtville held a 5-2 lead entering the sixth inning but gave up six runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Taking the loss was Isac Mejia, who pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing six earned runs, nine hits, walking four and striking out six. Jose Nuñez pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief, giving up a hit and striking out two.

Leading the Viking offense were Edward Castro and Eric Strahm, who both went 2-for-4. Castro finished with a run, an RBI and stole his first base of the year.

Holtville (6-4) returned to tournament action at 10 this morning, facing Calexico High at La Quinta.

Calexico 7, Desert Hot Springs 7

DESERT HOT SPRINGS — Calexico High's baseball team battled to a 7-7 tie against host Desert Hot Springs but lost in a total-base tie-breaker 22-21 in the opening round of the Coachella Tournament.


Albert Garcia went 2-for-3 with a double and J.P. Gonzalez and Eric Flores both had doubles for Calexico.

Calexico (7-6) played Holtville at 10 this morning at La Quinta.

Brawley 4, Laguna Hills 4

COACHELLA — The Brawley High baseball team tied Laguna Hills 4-4 in a game called because of darkness.

Brandon Burnett pitched seven strong nnings. He also doubled. Matt Smith drove in a run for Brawley.

Brawley (6-4-1) played again at 12:30 today at Palm Desert High.
