Local Shorts — Valley teams bounced from tournament

COACHELLA — It wasn't a good day for Imperial Valley League baseball teams competing in the Coachella Tournament here Tuesday as all three — Brawley Union High, Calexico and Holtville — were eliminated from the tournament.

Of the six games played by the three teams, only Calexico was able to mount a victory, beating Holtville 11-1 in five innings.

Picking up the win for Calexico was J.P. Gonzalez, who pitched a complete game, allowing only two hits.

Leading the Bulldog offense against the Vikings (6-6) were Aaron Lopez with a three-run home run and Albert Garcia, who went 2-for-3.

Jarret Hilfiker took the loss for Holtville and James Hawk and Isac Mejia record the team's only hits, both doubles.

The Bulldogs (8-7) later lost to La Quinta 18-7 in five innings after taking a 7-1 lead.

Taking the loss on the mound was Damien Lopez. Garcia again finished 2-for-3 for Calexico.

Holtville's second loss of the day came at the hands of Colton, 11-3.

Edward Castro took the pitching loss, going 4 1/3 innings for the Vikings, who committed four errors in the game.

Castro finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and an RBI. Adan Mejia had two hits and two RBI for Holtville.

In their first game on Tuesday, Brawley lost 11-1 to Cathedral City in six innings.

Dominic Aguirre took the loss for the Wildcats (6-6-1) giving up eight earned runs.

Mitchell Ruiz scored the team's only run, on an Andy Buckner hit.

Brawley then lost to IVL rival Palo Verde 6-3, with David Santana taking the loss, allowing four earned runs, two hits and five walks in four innings.

Joel Aguirre hit a two-run home run for Brawley and Ruiz went 2-for-4.

The three teams return to IVL action next week, with Holtville playing at Southwest in El Centro at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday and Calexico hosting Imperial at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday. Brawley hosts Palo Verde at 4:15 p.m. April 12.

HOLTVILLE — The Holtville High golf team took second place behind La Jolla Country Day at a quad meet at the Barbara Worth Golf Resort here Tuesday.

La Jolla Country Day finished with a 319 followed by Holtville with a 360, Warner Springs with a 368 and Julian with a 369.

Medalist for the day was LJCD's David Smith, who shot a 78.

Leading the Vikings were Steven Hawk with an 84, followed by Caleb Sandin with a 90, Jared Smith with a 91 and Colby Drye with a 95.

Holtville (10-4) plays Calexico at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Barbara Worth.
