BRAWLEY — Police here caught a county jail inmate this morning who had escaped Monday during a work detail outside the Imperial County jail complex.

Brawley police Lt. John Myers said police caught Travis Russell Collier, 36, around 6:24 a.m. while he was using a pay phone at Cattle Call Park in Brawley.

Myers said someone called Brawley police about 6:11 a.m. and told police Collier was using a pay phone at the park. Collier was arrested without incident.

Myers added Collier told police he was attempting to contact a reporter at this newspaper to tell his side of the story.

Collier walked away from a work detail about 1:30 p.m. Monday. He had been arrested Jan. 11 for violation of probation and possession of a stolen vehicle.

He was set to be released Sept. 11 but will have to serve more time because of the walk-away, according to jail officials.
