Hospital land donation on the way?

CALEXICO — Heffernan Memorial Hospital District Trustee Ray Falcon said a Calexico landowner could step forward in the next few weeks and donate 25 acres to the district for construction of a new hospital.

He said the district should have some sort of commitment in 30 days.

Falcon made the prediction during Thursday's district hospital board meeting as he updated the Heffernan board on the latest negotiations for land.

Board Chairman Mark Perrone explained why it would take a few weeks to get a firm commitment. He said accepting a donation of land is, "Not as easy as you think. We have to get together and draw up conditions."

As for who might donate the land, Falcon said, "We've met with Mr. Barry (Garman) trying to get some land, met with him a couple of times."

Alpine-based housing consultant Barry Garman represents a man who owns large plots of land near Highway 111.

In addition to talking with Garman, Falcon said the trustees have talked with Burlingame-based developer Wen-I Chang and Aptos-based landowner Linda Scaroni.

Chang owns land near Highway 111 and Jasper Road and the Scaroni family owns acreage across from Chang's property north of the Toys R Us.

Falcon said the trustees are awaiting an official letter of interest from the Scaronis.

As for Garman, "He hasn't committed himself," Falcon said.

In other business, the four trustees accepted City Councilman-elect David Ouzan's letter of resignation and talked about how to fill the vacancy on the five-person board.

Ouzan had to resign because he couldn't serve on the Heffernan board and the City Council at the same time.

District Attorney Eduardo Rivera told the board it needed to fill the vacancy within 90 days or the county Board of Supervisors would take action.

Perrone said the board should advertise the vacancy and accept applications. By unanimous vote, the board agreed.
