Three tipsters due cash awards

April 04, 2002|By MARIO RENTERÍA, Staff Writer

In order to award callers cash rewards for their help, the Imperial County Sheriff's Office is searching for three anonymous tipsters who provided information that led to three unrelated arrests.

A press release from the Sheriff's Office stated two of the arrests were for warrants and one was for a theft in El Centro.

The anonymous callers will be paid through the Imperial Valley CrimeStoppers.

The anonymous callers are encouraged to call Sheriff's Office Crime Prevention Supervisor Jerry Godsey at 339-6309. The callers must provide their code words to collect their rewards.

Although Godsey would not discuss the details surrounding the three arrests, he did say the Sheriff's Office is appreciative of the support from the community.

"It's great," he said of the support. "Without those tips we wouldn't have made the arrests."

"It's really gone up in the last year," he added of tips from the community.

He said the CrimeStoppers line now is getting five to six tips a week

Godsey said the total paid to the three anonymous callers will be $350.

"And we'd love to pay more," he added.

Those three arrests made were the first of this year resulting from information from the CrimeStoppers line.

"This is a way to help clean up the community's streets," he said.

Godsey said the program started about eight or nine years ago when Imperial Valley farming interests provided money to the Sheriff's Office to help stop a series of haystack arsons.

Sheriff Harold Carter stated in a press release, "It is our pleasure to reward citizens who care enough about Imperial County to do the right thing. These rewards are hopefully the first of many we will pay out."

Godsey encourages anyone with tips to call 339-6333. Callers may remain anonymous. He also reminded callers to leave as much information as possible about the crimes.
