Human skull found near Ocotillo Wells

OCOTILLO WELLS — Imperial County Sheriff's Office coroner investigators found a skull Thursday afternoon in the Fish Creek Wash and Split Mountain Road area.

The sighting of the skull, found about 3:30 p.m. Thursday by investigators, initially was reported by a Los Angeles family that had been vacationing in the area earlier this week. The skull sighting was reported to coroner's investigators about 9:41 a.m. Wednesday.

Investigators did not immediately search for the remains because they did not have a specific map coordinate, so the strategy was to meet with the reporting party and search for the body.

Imperial County Coroner Deputy Gary Hayes said after finding the skull investigators searched about a quarter-mile radius for more of the remains but nothing was found.

He said he thinks the skull may have been there for 6 to 8 months. He said it is possible the rest of the remains were carried off by animals.

Hayes said the remains could be from an undocumented immigrant who died last year.

He said some other remains were found in July near that same area and it is possible they are related. The skull will be sent to a forensic anthropologist for investigation.
