California Highway Patrol officers are investigating an accident that involved four suspected illegal immigrants this morning.

A press release from the California Highway Patrol states the four people, Juan Pech, 34, Kermet Nobelo, 19, Amanda Mendez, 34, and Carlos Quintero, 18, all of Yucatan, Mexico, were involved in a traffic accident about 4:45 on Brockman Road south of Preston Road.

A fifth person, who investigators think was the driver, fled the scene.

A spokesman from the U.S. Border Patrol said authorities think the four people found at the scene of the accident are illegal immigrants. He said the pickup truck in which they were traveling was first spotted on Highway 98 about three or four miles west of Drew Road by a "scope" unit.

The scope unit alerted ground units and attempted to catch the suspected vehicle. Agents caught the vehicle only to find it had overturned.

According to the CHP press release the driver of the truck was traveling north on Brockman Road. As he approached Preston Road he failed to slow for a curve in the road and ran off the roadway.

He attempted to steer back onto the road but overcorrected and overturned.

Nobelo and Quintero suffered minor injuries. They were taken to the El Centro Regional Medical Center.

Pech and Mendez were not injured.

No arrests were made and no one in the truck was wearing a seat belt.
