CALEXICO — Police here are searching for two men thought to be involved in the shooting of a 23-year-old man last month.

Calexico police Lt. Jim Neujahr said police are searching for Michael Bañuelos Sr., 42, also known as "Suni," and Michael Bañuelos Jr., 21, also known as "Peanut," who are father and son. They are wanted in connection with the March 4 shooting of Julio Perez.

Perez was gunned down in the 500 block of Grant Street about 6:30 that evening. Perez was shot five times, in the head, abdomen, chest, arm and leg. Perez survived and is in rehabilitation for his injuries.

Neujahr said police obtained two felony arrest warrants for the Bañueloses on March 29. Both are wanted for attempted murder. The younger Bañuelos will face an added charge of accessory to attempted murder.

Calexico police received reports March 4 regarding shots fired in the 800 block of Pierce Avenue. As officers responded to Pierce, more reports came of shots fired, but on Grant Street. Police responded to Grant, where they found the wounded Perez.

Neujahr reported an assailant confronted Perez on Pierce. Shots were fired but Neujahr was unsure if Perez was wounded at that time.

Perez was able to flee and jumped a fence and ended up in a carport of a residence on Grant. The suspect was right behind him and opened fire again in the carport.

Neujahr said police think the father and son are still in the area.

"We're hoping the citizens help us locate them or they turn themselves in," he said.

To report any information on the whereabouts of the Bañueloses, contact police at 768-2140.
