Brawley golfers place 10th

APPLE VALLEY — Brawley Union High's boys golf team placed 10th Monday among 32 teams at the Tops in CIF Tournament on Monday.

Michael Quick led the Wildcats, carding an 81 on the par-72 Spring Valley Country Club course. Adam Schmitt hit 82 and Garrett Sargo added 87. Their 250 score was 13 strokes behind the winning squad.

Brawley's "B" team of Ryan Mamer, Preston Soto and Taylor Smith, finished in the top 20 with a 277 score.

Brawley (8-9) hosts the other Imperial Valley League teams in a league match at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Del Rio Country Club.

Yuma Catholic 380

HOLTVILLE — Holtville High's boys golf team upped its record to 12-5 with a tri-meet win Monday, scoring 373 to Brawley Union High's 375 and Yuma Catholic's 380.

Yuma Catholic's Jonathan Hoppstetter was low medalist, carding an 84 on the par-71 Barbara Worth Golf Resort layout.

Stephen Hawk led Holtville with an 86, Colby Drye hit 89 and Kyle Goodsell and Adam Durant both added 99s.

Mark Miller shot 88 for Brawley, Steven Gibson had a 90, William Owen shot 98 and Eric Elmore added a 99.

Holtville (6-0 Desert Mountain League) faces Borrego Springs at noon Thursday at Rams Hills Country Club.

Boys tennis

Southwest 17, Calexico 1

CALEXICO — Southwest High's boys tennis team had one thing on its mind Monday as the Eagles whipped host Calexico 17-1.

"Domination," coach Genaro Pineiro said. "They wanted to come out and make a statement."

Pineiro was particularly impressed with his No. 1 singles player, Michael Palacio, who rolled to a 7-5, 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Calexico's top player, Efrain Escalante.

Playing No. 2 singles for Southwest, Timm Walter went 0-6, 6-0, 6-0. No. 3 Eagles netter John Bonano won 6-0, 6-1, 6-0.

Southwest's No. 1 doubles team of Greg and Randy Lyon triumphed 6-0 6-2, 6-4, No. 2 doubles Neil Stickles and Chris Thomas won 7-5, 6-3, 6-2, and No. 3 duo Bobby Romero and Jared Kaye won 6-2, 7-5, 6-0.

Also playing for Calexico were Chris Cota and Steve Zen in singles and Joseph Alvarez and Eric Leon, Steve Rivera and Jesus Lio, and Larry Tong and Wi Chui Mai in doubles.

Southwest (6-0 overall, 2-0 IVL) hosts Brawley Union High at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Calexico (1-1, 0-1) hosts Central Union High at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
