CALEXICO — A 14-year-old Calexico boy hit by a pickup while crossing Highway 111 on a bicycle is home and recovering from his injuries.

Calexico police Sgt. Jesus Serrano said Iran Hernandez is recovering from a broken leg and some internal injuries.

Serrano added Iran was lucky to survive. The fact he is young is helping in his fast recovery.

"If he was an older person, he would not have survived," said Serrano.

Iran was struck by a truck driven by Juan Duran Torrez, 47, of El Centro about 9:15 p.m. March 30 at the intersection of Highway 111 and Cole Road.

Iran was crossing the highway heading west on his bike and Torrez was traveling south on the highway at a speed of about 55 mph and crossing the intersection on a green light when the accident occurred.

Iran was thrown to the other side of the intersection after being hit by Torrez's pickup.

Serrano added the incident was classified as an accident and no arrests were made.
