>>50 years ago — Ralph Jasper of Yuma, in car No. 42, won the main event of the first races held under the lights at the fairgrounds in Imperial. Jasper beat out Lee Havens of El Centro in car No. 2, who finished second, and Jack Sadler of Imperial in car No. 21, who came in third.

>>40 years ago — Pioneers Memorial Hospital introduced some rate hikes starting July 1 and will request the county to levy higher district taxes, it was resolved at a meeting of the hospital district's Board of Directors last night. The hospital expects to add $30,000 annually to its income with the new measures.

>>30 years ago — A heavy turnout of Brawley's Eastside pushed Louis Curiel, sales manager for a local seed company, into the No. 1 vote-getter spot in Tuesday's race for three City Council seats. He was trailed closely by incumbents Pat Williams and John Benson.

>>20 years ago — The next time you see them together, it would be on your ballot April 13. Candidates for the El Centro City Council made their final joint appearance Friday, before the El Centro Kiwanis Club. The eight candidates are after two open council seats. Incumbents Ed Snively and Dale Gares decided not to run.
