Viking softball, baseball both down Bulldogs

HOLTVILLE — The Holtville High softball team improved to 2-2 in the Imperial Valley League with a 3-1 win over Calexico here Thursday.

Holtville's Lauren Huyler went 3-for-3 hitting and picked up the win on the mound, striking out eight, giving up one hit and not allowing any earned runs.

Taking the loss for Calexico was Marisol Cuevas, who did not allow an earned run.

Linda Mendoza recorded the Bulldogs' only hit and only run.

The Vikings play at Central Union High in El Centro at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday and Calexico (0-4) plays at Southwest in El Centro at 4:15 p.m. April 19.


Holtville 9, Calexico 7

CALEXICO — The Holtville High baseball team staved off a late run by Calexico to take a 9-7 Imperial Valley League victory here Thursday.


Down 6-0 after the first inning, Calexico fought back and tied things 7-7 in the fifth before Holtville pulled away for the win.

Picking up the win on the mound for the Vikings was Jose Nuñez, with Edward Castro earning the save.

Castro went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Holtville's Ryan Borchard was 2-for-3 with an RBI and teammate James Hawk was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

J.P. Gonzalez went 1-for-3 with a double and two runs for Calexico.

The Vikings (2-2 IVL) host Central at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday and Calexico will host Southwest at 4:15 p.m. April 19.

Boys golf

Central 155, Francis Parker 174

CORONADO — Led by Ivan Haro's 2-under-par 34, the Central Union High boys golf team won its 16th match of the year, knocking off Francis Parker 155-174 here Thursday.

Chris Robb shot a 39 for Central, Mario Luna shot a 40 and Beau Carson added a 42.

Central (16-5) competes in the Imperial Valley League meet at 1 p.m. Monday in Borrego Springs.

Southwest 83, Central 40


Central 87, Southwest 40

The Central Union and Southwest highs track and field teams split their Imperial Valley League meet at Southwest High in El Centro on Thursday, with the Eagle girls winning 83-40 and the Central boys winning 87-40.

Leading the Southwest girls (3-0 IVL) were Monica Gamboa and Rashauna Amos with four victories each.

Gamboa won the 400 meters with a time of 1 minute, 6.28 seconds. She also won the 800 (2:48.01). Amos was victorious in the 100 (12.32) seconds and 200 in 26.98.

The two teamed with Tasha Ernest and Erica Holmes to win the 4x100 (52.07) and the 4x400 in (4:35.33).

Jennifer Black picked up three individual wins for Southwest. She was first in the 110 hurdles (16.41), 300 hurdles (51.48) and high jump (4 feet, 10 inches).

Holmes picked up the team's other individual win, in the long jump (14-10).

Erica Camacho and Sonia Ramos led Central (0-2 IVL) with two individual wins each. Camacho won the 1,600 (6:04) and 3,200 (12:38.52). Ramos won the shot put (26-10) and discus (75-9 1/2).

Jocelyn Taylor won the triple jump (30-9 3/4) for Central.

J.D. Gaddis led Central's boys (2-0 IVL) winning the 110 hurdles (15.68), the 300 hurdles (42.83) and high jump (6-0).

Also picking up wins for Central were Anthony Hellum in the 200 (23.25), Anthony Sabal in the long jump (20-0), Martin Garcia in the triple jump (41-0) and Oscar Garcia in the discus (122-9).

For Southwest (1-2 IVL), Terrance Johnson won the 100 (11.21), Eric Holmes won the 400 (52.08), Devon Hood took the 800 (2:06.88), Doug Fulp won the 1,600 in 5:05.74, Garrett Bishop won the 3,200 (11:06.51) and Justin Ernest won the shot put (43-1).

Both teams will be in action at 3:15 p.m. Thursday with Central hosting Holtville and Imperial and Southwest competing at Calexico.
