3 people killed in Calexico-area accident

CALEXICO — California Highway Patrol officers are investigating an accident that left three people dead this morning at the intersection of Dogwood and Cole roads near here.

Few details were available this morning but what is known is the accident was reported about 3:37 a.m. and involved three vehicles.

County Coroner Investigator Deputy Gary Hayes said he was not able to release the names of the people killed because he had not yet contacted their families.


County fire Capt. John Green said a pickup being driven by an Imperial Irrigation District employee and a van seemed to collide head-on. Two people in the van were killed.

The IID employee was killed by another van that struck him as he was returning to his truck after giving aid to passengers in the first van involved in the accident sequence.

That first van was carrying six people. The four survivors were taken to El Centro Regional Medical Center and Pioneers Memorial Hospital in Brawley with various injuries.

It was unclear how many people were in the third vehicle. What is known is at least one person from the third vehicle was injured.

CHP investigators remained at the scene of the accident at presstime this morning.
