Wildcats earn seven medals at invitational

POWAY — The Brawley Union High boys and girls track and field teams had their share of success at the Poway Invitational here Saturday, earning even medals.

The team of Cynthia Flores, Kamilah Hilliard and Corina Carpio captured Brawley's only gold, winning the team shot put with a combined 90 feet, 4 inches, which set a school record.

Flores and Carpio teamed with Mariam Carrillo to take second in the discus with a combined 244-11.

In the triple jump, Nichelle Engels and Rozolyn Rutledge totaled a 49-3 1/2 to take third place.

Placing but not medaling was the team of Engels, Rutledge and Whitney Williams, which took fourth place in the long jump with a 38-9 1/2.

On the boys side, the team of Mark Martinez, Brandon Wellcome and Adrian Santana took second place in the shot put with combined throws of 127 feet and second in the discus with combined tosses of 368-1.


Also taking second place for the Wildcats was the high jump team of Gabriel Alvarez and Raul Hernandez, whose 5-8 was good enough for the silver. Both Alvarez and Hernandez took attempts in the high jump, but only Hernandez was able to clear the first jump, which counted toward the team height.

Xay Shephard, Nate Engels and Gabriel Alvarez totaled a 113-10 in the triple jump to earn third place.

Placing but not medaling for Brawley was Marcos Torres, who took fifth in the 400 meters.
