CALEXICO — Police are searching for suspects after a Calexico man was shot twice here Saturday night.

Rigoberto Ramirez Jr., 23, was shot in the arm and grazed by two bullets in the back of the head and the chest. The bullet that grazed his chest lodged into his arm.

Calexico police Sgt. Armando Marquez said police were called to the 800 block of Lincoln Avenue about 10:30 p.m. Saturday in reference to a shooting.

When police arrived they found Ramirez inside the home of a friend and bleeding on the floor. He was quickly taken to El Centro Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Marquez said Ramirez was in "moderate condition" at the time of the shooting despite being grazed in the head. He also said it appeared as if Ramirez was sitting down when he was shot from the side, although investigators are unsure where he was sitting when attacked.

Marquez said investigators don't know if Ramirez walked to the residence or was helped by someone.

He added police have not received any information on the suspect from witnesses or from Ramirez. Ramirez was either incoherent or uncooperative with investigators after the shooting.

Marquez said investigators don't know if one or several suspects were involved or whether the shooting was gang-related. He did say the incident is still under investigation.

A spokeswoman for El Centro Regional said the hospital does not have any record of treating Ramirez.
