Hornets win in 10th inning

CALIPATRIA — Sergio Flores hammered a shot up the middle with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning Monday to give host Calipatria High's baseball team a 13-12 win over Midway Baptist.

The Hornets moved into a first-place tie with Midway Baptist in the Citrus League. Both teams sport 6-1 marks.

Vontray Taylor got aboard for Calipatria with a bunt single in the 10th and Andrew Daffern followed with a base hit to move Taylor to second. From there he scored on Flores' single.

Taylor had two of Calipatria's nine hits. Johnny Fallavollita had a key double and scored four runs. Andy Perralta also had a key hit.

Daniel Sadberry pitched six strong innings before yielding to Perralta.

The game was played in windy conditions. Calipatria coach Tom Cato noted his center and right fielders shifted to the right in response to the conditions.


Center fielder Taylor came up with a spectacular catch in the top of the 10th, leaping to snag a line drive in the gap in right center with runners aboard for the third out.

Calipatria (6-4 overall) hosts Lutheran High at 3:15 p.m. Friday.


Calipatria 20, Midway Baptist 9

CALIPATRIA — The Calipatria High softball team had little trouble getting past Midway Baptist in Citrus League action here Monday, winning 20-9 in six innings.

Leading the Calipatria offense were Griselda Aceves, who went 4-for-5 with a home run, double, four runs and six RBI and Gracie Palazuelos, who went 4-for-5 with three runs and three RBI.

Joann Bonillas finished 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs and four RBI for the Hornets (6-5)

Picking up the win for Calipatria was Sara Erickson, who pitched a complete game, allowing six hits, four earned runs and striking out four.

The Hornets play at 3:15 p.m. Monday at Calvary Christian in Vista.

Boys tennis

Southwest 10, Central 8

The Southwest High boys tennis team edged Central Union High 10-8 on Monday.

Timm Walter played No. 1 singles for Southwest and went 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 in his sets. Bobby Romero played No. 2 singles for the Eagles and scored 2-6, 2-6, 6-0. Jared Kaye played No. 3 singles for Southwest and went 4-6, 5-7, 6-0. Frank Esquer was No. 1 singles for Central and Octavio Cortez played No. 2 singles. The Spartans defaulted No. 3 singles.

Greg and Randy Lyon played No. 1 doubles for Southwest and went 6-1, 6-0, 6-0. Chris Thomas and Neil Stickles were No. 2 doubles for the Eagles and won 6-1, 6-1, 6-0. Southwest defaulted No. 3 doubles. Seth Vogel and Angel Paleo played No. 1 doubles for Central and Alex Lopez and Jon Harmon were No. 2 doubles.

Southwest (7-0 overall, 2-0 Imperial Valley League) hosts Coachella at 3:15 today. Central (2-4 overall, 1-1 IVL) hosts Brawley at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
