>>50 years ago — Charles R. Ritter was appointed fire inspector today by the Brawley fire chief after having served on the Brawley Fire Department since 1949. The 30-year-old lieutenant was promoted to fill the position vacated by Charles Warren, elected as city clerk recently.

>>40 years ago —>>40 years ago — Ex-sheriff's Deputy S.L. Monk has lodged a $12,604 claim with Imperial County charging he worked 4,113 hours overtime in five years for which he was not paid. His wife, Jane Monk, has filed a $8,400 claim for money she says is due her services as a matron at the Winterhaven sub-station for seven years. The Board of Supervisors on Monday turned over the claim to the District Attorney's Office for investigation.

>>30 years ago — Two local boxers, "Irish" Danny Kimberly of El Centro and Victor Basilio of Brawley, will headline the first professional fight card in the Valley in 30 years. The 10-round middleweight bout will be April 21 at the Preble Building at the California Mid-Winter Fairgrounds.

>>20 years ago — Holly Sugar is thinking sweet thoughts today as Valley sugar beet growers begin their harvest for 1972. Growers are hoping to sweeten their pots although the price paid for beets is down. Experts predict a fairly good crop yield this year.
