Brawley track squads win

BRAWLEY — Both Brawley Union High's track and field teams topped visiting Palo Verde High on Wednesday.

The Wildcat girls triumphed, 81-44 and the Brawley boys won 77-50.

Brawley's Whitney Williams won the girls 100-meter dash in 13.27 seconds and the 200 with a 27.37 clocking and took the long jump with a leap of 14 feet 5 inches. She also anchored the winning 4x100 relay team (54.06).

The Wildcats' Lizette Acevedo won the 400 (1:04.62), placed second in the 200 and was on the victorious 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams. Brawley's Meg Allen placed second in the 800 and 3,200 and was on the 4x400 relay team.

Brawley's Cynthia Flores won the discus and shot put with respective marks of 96-8 and 36-9. Korina Carpio was second in the discus and third in the shot and Kamilah Hilliard was second in the shot and third in the discus.


For the boys, Brawley's Sergio Loya won the 300 hurdles (43.2), and the long jump (18-7 1/2), and was on the winning 4x400 relay team.

The Wildcats' Xay Shepherd won the triple jump (41-1), was third in the 100 and ran on the winning 4x400 relay team. Brawley's Marcos Torres won the 400 (52.31) and the 200 (27.67).

Brawley's Arturo Contreras won the 800 (2:12.91). His brother Gerardo Contreras was second and Hector Martinez completed the sweep for Brawley.

Brawley's boys are 3-0 in the Imperial Valley League and the Wildcat girls are 2-1. Brawley competes next at 3 p.m. April 25 at Central Union High in El Centro.

Brawley 163, El Capitan 167

LAKESIDE — Ryan Mamer shot a 2-over-par 38 Wednesday to lead Brawley Union High's boys golf team to a 163-167 win over host El Capitan.

Brawley's Garrett Fargo and Michael Quick both carded 40s at Willowbrook Country Club and Adam Schmitt added 45 for the Wildcats.

Brawley (18-9) competes at 1 today at the Barbara Worth Golf Resort in an Imperial Valley League match.

La Jolla 16, Southwest 2

LA JOLLA — Southwest High's boys tennis team suffered its first loss of the season Wednesday, falling to host La Jolla 16-2.

The Vikings are one of the top teams in the CIF San Diego Section, Southwest coach Genaro Pineiro said. Usually they breeze through opponents 18-0 in under two hours.

Southwest's No. 1 singles player, Michael Palacios, managed to win one set as he went 0-6, 3-6, 6-3. The Eagles' No. 2 netter, Timm Walter, lost 0-6, 2-6, 4-6, and Southwest's No. 3 player, John Bonano, went 0-6, 3-6, 2-6.

The Eagles' No. 1 duo of Greg and Randy Lyon went 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, Southwest's No. 2 tandem of Bobby Romero and Jared Kaye went 0-6, 3-6, 3-6 and the Eagles' No. 3 team of Hector Bravo and Kareem Salem went 0-6, 1-6. The Eagles' substitute team of Chris Thomas and Neil Stickles fell 1-6.

Southwest (8-1 overall, 3-0 Imperial Valley League) hosts Calexico at 5 p.m. Monday.
