CALIPATRIA — A haystack fire here was roaring this morning and the Calipatria Fire Department expected it to be burning through most of the day.
Calipatria fire officials said about 98 one-ton haystack barrels were reported as burning about 3 a.m. near Young and Brandt roads northwest of Calipatria.
Fire crews said the fire had already been burning for about an hour before it was reported. Crews said the fire was not reported initially because it did not pose any threat to any surrounding structures and the haystack burning was already considered a total loss.
Crews said fighting the fire would only be futile so they would let it burn out, which would take most of the day. The origin of the fire was unknown to firefighters.
