Southwest Academy accepting applications

April 19, 2002|STAFF REPORT

The Southwest Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts is now accepting applications for the 2002-2003 school year.

Any Imperial Valley student in grades 10-12 may apply. An interdistrict transfer will be allowed upon acceptance into the program.

Students may choose a focus area in dance, theater or music. Additionally, a new area may be included in the fall — a theater technology focus.

Previous performing arts experience is not necessary.

Academy students have an extended day with performing arts classes arranged in a two-hour block during seventh and eighth period (2-4 p.m.).

SAVAPA students have the opportunity to assist professional touring companies with setup for productions and will gain experience with stagecraft, lighting and other technical aspects of production.

SAVAPA students attend field trips that allow them to see professional productions and attend workshops that enrich their performing arts education.

Students have first-hand experience planning, producing, rehearsing and performing major musicals and theater and dance productions.

Students will discover additional ways of self-expression and communication as modeled and taught through the performing arts, according to a press release from SAVAPA.

Students perform for local civic organizations, schools and at special events throughout the community.

Applications may be obtained at Southwest High School, 2001 Ocotillo Drive in El Centro.
