Wrestlers place at qualifier

BRAWLEY — Many Valley wrestlers placed in the top four at a national high school qualifying wrestling tournament here Saturday, qualifying for the National High School Open June 30-July 3 in Norfolk, Va.

The tournament is sponsored by the National High School Coaches Association and is open to wrestlers of all ages.

Among the winners were Alfonso Osuna (El Centro, elementary school division, 65 pounds), Chan Leonard (Calipatria, elementary school, 105), Raymond Elizalde (Imperial, middle school division, 80-90), James Smith (Brawley, middle school, 115), Richard Beltran (El Centro, middle school, 125), Bobby Velasco (Brawley, high school division, 119), Jesse Soto (Brawley, high school, 145), Bobby Myers, (Brawley, high school, 160) and Ricardo Arriquive (Brawley, high school, 275).

Second-place finishers included Mark Smith (El Centro, elementary school, 65), Nathan Rowe (Brawley, elementary school, 90), Gina Estrada, (Calipatria, middle school, 80-90), Mark Ojeda (Brawley, middle school, 105), Chauncey Rowe (Brawley, middle school, 125), Abraham Gonzales (Brawley, middle school, 155), Lorenzo Soto (Brawley, high school, 112), Johnny Fallavollita (Calipatria, high school, 130), Jesus Campos (Brawley, high school, 145), Frank Beltran (Brawley, high school, 215) and Brent Hart (El Centro, high school, 275).


Third-place finishers included Steve Elizalde (Brawley, elementary school, 65), Richard Trujillo (Imperial, middle school, 80-90), Daniel Solorio (Brawley, high school, 135), Anthony Arrevalo (Brawley, high school, 140), Alex Aguirre (Brawley, high school 160), Eric Encinas (Brawley, high school, 189), Robert Platt (Brawley, high school, 215) and Andrew Carrera (Calexico, high school, 275).

Imperial Valley flag football

The JD Glass and Construction Outlaws take on A and R Construction Red Dog on Saturday for the Imperial Valley Flag Football League championship.

Kickoff is at 11 a.m. at Swarthout Park in El Centro. The consolation championship game pitting AMAC against Bud Lite starts at 10 a.m.

The Outlaws reached the title game with two wins Saturday. They drilled JL Daddy's Pride, sponsored by JL Sportswear, 52-7 and edged Bud Lite 20-14.

Red Dog tripped Desert Heat 20-6 and turned back AMAC 33-7 last Saturday.

In other games last week, Bud Lite, sponsored by Alford Distributing, topped Performance Mechanical Contractors 27-13 and AMAC bumped Calexico 19-13.

The Imperial Valley Flag Football League raises funds for the Cal Jones Scholarship, which distributes money to high school seniors. More than $12,000 in scholarships have been awarded in the nine years the league has been in existence.

The league consists of teams from Holtville, Imperial, El Centro and Calexico.

Barbara Worth Women's

Golf Association

HOLTVILLE — Darla Vessey captured low gross honors at the Barbara Worth Women's Golf Association's annual club championship.

Vessey posted a score of 329 for four days of 18-hole golf.

Carol Rae Roundtree won low net honors with a 294.

Eclipse 12-and-under softball

NORCO — The Imperial Valley Eclipse 12-and-under traveling softball team went 2-1 last weekend, with all three games one-run affairs.

The Eclipse lost to the California Cougars 3-2 and came from behind twice to defeat the Desert Lightning 4-3. In the final game, the Eclipse prevailed 1-0 in eight innings over the host Norco Fillys. Breanna Ruelas got the win on the mound.

The Eclipse next plays May 11-12 in a Triple Crown tournament in Cathedral City.

Imperial Valley Gymnastics

EL CAJON — Several members of Imperial Valley Gymnastics placed at the Butterfly Classic here this past weekend.

Competing in level 4 age 6-9 division, Carissa Acuña finished second in the all-around with a 35.15. She scored 8.7 on the vault, 8.35 on the bars, 8.825 on the beam and 9.225 in the floor exercise.

Tiffany Johnson finished fifth in the all-around in level 4 age 11 and older division, scoring 34.45. She scored 8.8 on the vault, 8.45 on the bars, 8.5 on the beam and 8.7 on the floor.

Savanna Nelson won the all-around title in level 5 age 7-10 division with a 33.775. She scored 8.2 on the vault, 8.2 on the bars, 8.125 on the beam and 9.25 on the floor.

Rachel Burt scored 29.975 in the all-around in the level 5 age 7-10 division. She scored 7.85 on the vault, 6.825 on the bars, 7.3 on the beam and 8.0 on the floor.

Imperial Valley Gymnastics competes this weekend at the Milky Way Classic in San Diego.
