El Centro library hosting read-a-thon

April 19, 2002

The El Centro Public Library at 539 State St. will host its poetry read-a-thon from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday in recognition of April's National Poetry Month and in acknowledgment of National Library Week.

National Library Week has been observed April 14-20 since 1958 to celebrate the contribution of the nation's libraries to their communities and to promote the importance of reading.

National Poetry Month began in 1996 and is sponsored by the Academy of American Poets, who this year have chosen and recognized the contributions of American poets Langston Hughes, Shel Silverstein, Marie Pinsot, Gertrude Stein and W.H. Auden.

The El Centro Public Library invites children and adults to visit the library Saturday and share poems of their favorite poets to all listeners. Refreshments will be provided.
