>>50 years ago — The Imperial Valley returned to its "normal" weather today after a weekend that brought a sandstorm and unexpected rainfall. Dust-bearing winds reached 63 mph Sunday afternoon, graying skies and snapping trees all over the Valley

>>40 years ago — Total valuation of all building permits for Brawley amounted to $1.54 million for 1961, according to a just-released comprehensive survey of building permits prepared by the research department of Security First National Bank.

>>30 years ago — One of the first actions of the new El Centro City Council was a 3-2 decision not to enforce a city law prohibiting signs in residential areas. Councilmen J. Fred Hess, William Condit and Frank Arellano defeated a motion authorizing enforcement of an ordinance prohibiting any signs in residential zoned areas.

>>20 years ago — Brawley will have two new council members, a new mayor and a new mayor pro tem following Tuesday night's meeting of the City Council. The meeting usually starts at 7:30 p.m. Monday, but because of the election last week, it had to be reset to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the council chambers.
