Blood drive at Alford's Distributing on Tuesday

April 21, 2002

Alford Distributing and the Sunrunners Car Club will be conducting a blood drive with Imperial Valley Blood Services on Tuesday at Alford Distributing, 599 E. Main St. in El Centro.

Donations will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Cherie Alford, executive vice president of Alford Distributing, said the blood drive is to benefit two longtime car club members, Frank Barros and Ed Quan, both of whom are ill and may need blood.

"I think it would be great if we could draw 50 to 60 pints of blood," Alford added.

"The drive also will benefit the entire Imperial Valley community," said blood drive coordinator Trish Burich-McNeece, "because the blood we draw here is returned to the two local hospitals to meet the needs of area patients."

Burich-McNeece added the drive is open to the general public and she is encouraging anyone who can, but especially people with "O" positive and "O" negative, to donate. Anyone who hasn't given since Feb. 26 is eligible to give again.

"For those who have never seen it, Alford Distributing also has an antique car museum which donors will have the opportunity to visit," said Burich-McNeece.

Additionally, Pioneers Memorial Hospital is offering free cholesterol screening for donors who want it.

All donors also will be entered into a drawing for five sets of four tickets each to a Padres game compliments of KXO radio and will receive the new "Life's About Giving … Homeland Hero" T-shirt, along with a blood-drop baby. Free pizza and other refreshments will be served.

Potential new donors should be at least 17, in good health and weigh 110 pounds or more.
