Flag ceremony scheduled for May 18 at Valley Plaza

An American flag ceremony to benefit local youth is scheduled for May 18 at Valley Plaza in El Centro.

El Centro resident Ken Burkey said the purpose of the effort is begin showing the flag anew on holidays.

"The purpose of the ceremony is to help kids," he said.

The ceremony will begin at 8 a.m. with the raising of the flag by local Girl Scouts. Cub Scouts will show the public the proper methods for hanging the flag on walls, and Boy Scouts will lower the flag and show the proper method of folding the flag.

Service clubs, nonprofit organizations, church groups, youth groups and other interested parties are invited to participate and set up tables to inform the public about their groups.

Burkey, 62 and an Army veteran, said he is inviting local politicians to speak at $100 donation per 10-minute speech. He said all proceeds will go toward scholarships and to pay for youngsters to attend camp.


The event will be in the four-story office building housing Valley Plaza offices at 1681 Main St.

Burkey said he and others will display flags on holidays, including Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, President's Day, Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day and Veterans Day.

Flags will be placed along Main, Broadway, State Street, Imperial Avenue and North Fourth Street, Burkey said.
