Thank You: Imperial Valley is very fortunate to have these public servants

April 21, 2002

Public servants generally are the recipients of abuse about how "they don't care." May I provide a story that may at least bend our biased beliefs.

I was faced with arduous task of moving my mom from her home and placing her in a facility for her safety. Bore you I could with the hell endured in the years leading up to the decision to act.

Once that decision was made, how was I to legally and morally proceed to put a safety net around my mom? This arduous process would never have happened without the assistance and leadership of Norma Saikhon, county public administrator, and Tom Barrington, deputy county counsel, along with their collective staffs.

Ms. Saikhon and Tom Barrington expedited a process that can be arduous, very lengthy and mentally and emotionally taxing. Their efforts gave my mom dignity and a peacefully safe existence in the last few months of her life. Had either of those two individuals just been neutral in the process, nothing would have happened to make my mom's life easier or safer.

Because they acted as decent humans and good citizens, Mom ended her life under better circumstances. For these simple acts alone it makes me proud that I came from the Valley and why you are fortunate.

Thank you Norma Saikhon and Tom Barrington.
