Cardenas and Shoch earn CIF consideration

SAN DIEGO — The Brawley Union High boys and girls swim team took their best shots at defending San Diego Section Division II champion University of San Diego High School here Friday but fell short, with the boys losing 109-60 and the girls falling 110-60.

Natalia Cardenas and Ethan Schoch racked up CIF consideration times for Brawley.

Cardenas won the 200-yard freestyle finishing in 2 minutes, 15.53 seconds, a CIF consideration time.

Schoch earned CIF consideration in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 1:08.69, good enough for second place.

Picking up multiple wins for the Brawley boys (8-3 overall) was Petter Malvik in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:04.17 and the 100-yard backstroke in 1:04.64.

Brooke Pace won the 100 breaststroke in 1:14.11 and teamed with Denae Smith, Jennifer Cardenas and Lauren Roberts to win the 200-yard medley relay in 2:02.35 for the Brawley girls (9-2).

Said Wildcat coach D'Ann Luckey: "We had some good races and I was very proud of the fight our swimmers put up."

Brawley will compete in the Palm Springs Invitational begining at 9 a.m. Saturday. The Wildcats' meet against Southwest at Central Union High has been rescheduled for 4 p.m. April 30.
