CALIPATRIA — A 23-year-old beer-wielding man was arrested Sunday for assault with a deadly weapon after he hit another man with a beer can.

Benjamin Lopez Navarrete of Cathedral City was arrested about 6:40 p.m. Sunday after he hit Robert Steele, 21, of Calipatria with a beer. Apparently, Steele did not let Navarrete use his motorcycle and Navarrete reacted by hitting Steele with a beer can on the neck.

Calipatria Police Chief Reggie Gomez said Navarrete was visiting some relatives in the 100 block of Alexandria Street. Navarrete spotted Steele and his friend Jacob Freitas, 19, of Calipatria washing Steele's motorcycle.

Navarrete asked Steele if he could ride his motorcycle but Steele said no. The allegedly intoxicated Navarrete started heading back to his relatives' home when he shouted something and threw a beer can at Steele and hit him. Steele suffered minor injuries.
