Santos sparks Vincent

CALEXICO — Nick Santos went 2-for-3, stole four bases and earned the victory on the mound Wednesday as Vincent Memorial High's baseball team downed visiting Borrego Springs 12-4.

Santos struck out seven and allowed just two runs in six innings. Julian Escalera pitched the last inning.

Chris Del Rio had three hits, including a double, and stole two bases for Vincent and Fernando Goycoolea had two hits, including one that drove in two runs for the Scots.

Vincent (7-6 overall, 5-5 Citrus League) hosts Julian at 3:30 today.

Boys tennis

Southwest 12, Calexico 6

Southwest High's boys tennis team improved to 11-1 on the season and 5-0 in the Imperial Valley League on Wednesday with a 12-6 win over visiting Calexico.

Southwest's No. 1 singles player, Michael Palacio, scored 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, the Eagles' No. 2 netter, Timm Walter, went 2-6, 6-1, 4-6 and Southwest's No. 3 singles player, Jake Park, scored 0-6, 4-6, 0-6. Playing singles for Calexico were Efrain Escalante at No. 1, Jair Hernandez at No. 2 and Chris Cota at No. 3.


Southwest's No. 1 doubles team of Greg and Randy Lyon won 6-0, 6-1, 6-2, the Eagles' No. 2 tandem of Hector Bravo and Kareem Salem went 6-2, 7-5, 6-3 and Southwest's No. 3 duo of Neil Stickles and Robby Romero won 6-0, 6-4, 7-6 (6-4). Playing doubles for Calexico were Larry Tong and Eric Leon at No. 1, Joseph Alvarez and Wo Chu Mai at No. 2 and Steve Rivera and Jesus Leon at No. 3.

Southwest hosts Brawley Union High at 5 p.m. Monday. Calexico (2-3, 0-3) plays 5 p.m. Monday at Central Union High in El Centro.

Southwest 93, Palo Verde 31

Jennifer Black won three events Wednesday to lead Southwest High's girls track and field team to a 93-31 win over visiting Palo Verde High. The Eagles are 4-1 in the Imperial Valley League and 10-1 overall.

Black won the high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 8 inches, the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 48.9 seconds and the 100 hurdles, clocking 16.39.

Rashauna Amos won the 100 (12.5) and the 200 (27.04). She teamed with Monica Gamboa, Tasha Ernest and Erica Holmes to win both the 4x100 (51.21) and the 4x400 relays (4:21).

Gamboa won the 800 (2:26), Ernest won the 400 (1:06), Holmes won the long jump (15-5), Jennifer Eyer won the 3,200 (14:14) and Norma Tabarez won the discus (65-1).

Eric Holmes won the 400 (53.37) and the high jump (4-9) to lead Southwest's boys to a 76-51 win over Palo Verde. The Eagles are 3-2 in league and 6-5 overall.

Holmes teamed with Devin Hood, Doug Fulp and Kenn Bonano to win the 4x400 relay (3:47).

Also for Southwest, Fulp won the 1,600 (4:50), Hood won the 800 (2:17), Justin Ernest won the shot put (46-1), Brandon Pipkin won the discus (129-0), Terrance Johnson won the 200 (22.97) and Garrett Bishop won the 3,200 (10:45).

Southwest hosts Holtville at 4 p.m. May 2.
