Central runs past Brawley

Sparked by its 4x100 relay team, Central Union High's boys track and field team upended visiting Brawley Union High 98-49 in a showdown of two unbeaten Imperial Valley League teams.

The Spartan quartet of Eric Henderson, Jarrel Henderson, Anthony Sabal and Martin Garcia clocked 45.44 seconds to edge Brawley at the finish line. The Wildcats timed 45.45.

"It was a great race," Central coach Ron Shane said. "It set the tone for the whole meet."

Sabal won the 100-meter dash in 11.29 and the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 9.75 inches.

Central's Aaron Garcia won the 1,600, clocking 5:45, and the 800 in 2:13.38. He ran on the victorious 4x400 relay team with J.D. Gaddis, Mike Garcia and Andrew Valdez. They timed 3:36.32.

Gaddis won the 300 hurdles with a 43.47 and the 110 high hurdles with a 15.56. He finished second in the high jump (5-6) to teammate Jarrel Henderson, who cleared 5-10. The Spartans' Martin Garcia won the triple jump (41-01).


Brawley's Marcos Torres won the 400 (53.79) and the 200 (23.83). The Wildcats' Brandon Wellcome won the shot put (42-02).

Central's boys improve to 4-0 in the Imperial Valley League while Brawley falls to 3-1.

"It was a great track performance by two good schools," Shane said.

"I want to congratulate Central," Brawley coach Don Biagi said. "They were the team to beat."

Brawley's girls defeated Central 94-32 to improve to 3-1 in the IVL. Central's girls are 1-3.

Brawley's Cynthia Flores won the shot put (37-11) and the discus (102-10).

The Wildcats' Meg Allen won the 1,600 (5:34.6) and the 800 (2:40.06). Brawley's Lizette Acevedo won the 400 (1:05.32).

Central's Angelica Asaeli won the 100 (13.56). She also teamed with Diane Johnson, Joselyn Taylor and Dionne Williams to win the 4x100 relay (44.08).

Central travels to Blythe for a meet at 3:15 p.m. Thursday against Palo Verde High. Brawley is at Calexico for a meet at 3:15 p.m. Thursday.

CALEXICO — Donna Garnica won two individual events Thursday to lead Calexico High's girls track and field team to a tri-meet victory.

The Bulldog girls, who remain unbeaten, scored 86 points to Holtville's 53 and Imperial's 16.

Garnica won the high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 6 inches and captured the 300-meter hurdles in 59.72 seconds.

Calexico's Melany Hernandez won the 100 (12.6) and 200 (28.10). The Bulldogs' Alicia Torres won the long jump (14-4).

Holtville's Raquel Hernandez won the 1,600 (6:04.52). Holtville's Hilary Singh won the discus (90-7) and was second in the shot put (28-2 1/2). The Vikings' Nina Rivas won the triple jump (31-3).

Calexico's Chris Ramsey won three individual events to lead the Bulldog boys to victory. Calexico posted 71 points to Imperial's 53 and Holtville's 32.

Ramsey won the high jump at 5-8, the long jump at 18-8 1/4 and the triple jump at 39-10 1/2.

Holtville's Edell Lopez won the 1,600 (5:00.34) and 3,200 (11:33.02) and was second in the 800 (2:22.18).

Calexico (5-0 girls Imperial Valley League, 3-2 boys) hosts Brawley Union High at 3:15 p.m. Thursday. Holtville (0-5 IVL both boys and girls) competes at 3:15 p.m. Thursday at Southwest in El Centro along with Imperial.


Vincent forfeit win

CALEXICO — Vincent Memorial High's baseball team earned a forfeit win Thursday over Julian. Julian failed to show for the game and umpires awarded the win to the Scots.

Vincent (8-6 overall, 6-5 Citrus League) travels to Pine Valley for a game at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday against Mountain Empire.

Boys golf

Central Desert Classic

HOLTVILLE — Twenty-four teams from throughout Southern California tee off at 1 today at Barbara Worth Golf Resort in the Central Union High Desert Classic golf tournament.

Some of the top teams in the CIF Southern and San Diego sections are entered in the 36-hole event.

Play continues again at noon Saturday.

Brawley 157, Eastlake 159

CHULA VISTA — Garrett Fargo shot a 38 Thursday to lead Brawley Union High's boys golf team to a 157-159 win over host Eastlake.

Adam Schmitt shot a 39 at Eastlake Country Club and Ryan Mamer and Michael Quick added 40s.

Brawley (20-9) competes today and Saturday in the Central tournament at the Barbara Worth Golf Resort.
