Voice: Cancer survivor talks about survival regimen

April 28, 2002

As a cancer survivor I was asked to speak on surviving at the recent Relay for Life sponsored by the Imperial Valley chapter of American Cancer Society. I was unable to do so due to just receiving word a good friend of mine had just been diagnosed with terminal cancer of the pancreas. As are most cases it was unexpected.

I would like to share these thoughts: I am a survivor, after having had major surgery and radiation therapy, which was required to prevent recurrence. Prayer, care and concern of family and friends, following the guidelines of your doctor are all contributing factors of survival. It may be a difficult task but sharing your concern with someone diagnosed with cancer is very important.

I recently attended a benefit barbecue put on for a child in Holtville. It was held at the Moose Lodge in Imperial. Bill Woelke, Ben Jenkins as well as their family and friends from Holly Sugar were responsible for its success.

It is caring folks like these who lead to the success of survival. Recent action reducing cancer research funds by the state makes it more important that we all donate what we can to help.
