Voice: Earth Day should be for advocating for the environment

April 28, 2002

I am writing out of grave concern for our environment and public health. During the past year, the federal government has made numerous decisions that weaken important environmental safeguards, decisions that will have devastating consequences for our Valley communities where our air pollution is among the worst in the nation.

The water pollution is even worse with chemical and bio-hazards increasing every year. Although this may be good for my business, I would prefer to be put out of business by lack of need for the air and water purification equipment I sell.

This Earth Day we should have been urging everyone who has any control over environmental issues, from President Bush to city and town council persons, to respect the overwhelming consensus for environmental protection in this country and not allow agribusiness, trucking corporations and foreign governments to undermine our environmental laws.

Let's make sure America remains forever "America the Beautiful."
