Haro takes third at Classic

HOLTVILLE — Central Union High's Ivan Haro shot a 150 to take third place in the Central Union High School Desert Classic Invitational at the Barbara Worth Golf Resort here Saturday.

Haro beat teammate Mario Luna and Phillip Lapuz of Carlsbad in sudden death to take third place behind medalist Joe Ryan of Carlsbad, who shot a 145, and Peter Cambell of La Costa Canyon, who carded a 147.

La Costa Canyon won the 23-team event with a combined team score of 767.

Central was the top local finisher with a team score of 841, good enough for 10th place. Palo Verde was 11th with an 843, followed by Brawley in 12th with an 850 and Southwest in 13th with an 873.

Scoring for Central along with Haro and Luna, both with 150s, were Chris Robb with a 168, Adam Moler with a 180 and Kyle Ott with a 193.


Adam Schmidt led Brawley with a 162, followed by Garrett Fargo with a 164, Michael Quick with a 167, Ryan Mamer with a 177 and Preston Soto with a 180.

Leading Southwest were Trevor Tagg with a 163, Bobby Kirby with a 174, Tyler Douthitt and Billy Skinner with 177s and Arek Legarra with a 182.

Said Spartan coach Allan Pipkin: "This is one of the premier golf tournaments in Southern California and some of the top teams in the (CIF) San Diego and Southern sections come down to play in this. Overall this was a good couple of days of golf for everyone."

Brawley, Central and Southwest compete in the Yellowjacket Scramble beginning at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Blythe.
