BRAWLEY — Police here are investigating a drive-by shooting on a residential street across from the Lions Center gymnasium Monday.

The shooting occurred about 8:30 p.m. in the 200 block of A Street. Police are looking into whether a particular home was the target of the shooting. Police received a call about the shooting from a home in the block.

There were no injuries in the shooting and police today were searching for signs that any structures were hit by gunfire.

Brawley Police Chief Henry Graham said it is thought one vehicle was struck by at least one gunshot.

Graham said police were trying to determine a motive for the shooting. He said if it turns out to be gang-motivated, such events tend to be sporadic and isolated.

The shooting took place across from the gym, but the city recreation facility was not in use, according to Parks and Recreation Department staffers.

Graham said he does not think there is danger in the area.

Still, he said it is a "major concern" when a shooting takes place near where youths have recreation services.

Karin Morgan, city parks and recreation director, said while the gym was not in use at the time of the shooting, there were children using the Little League fields east of the city swimming pool Monday evening.
