Regarding Paul Rodriguez Boulevard and the plight of the Hispanics in our area. I feel that this street dedication would serve as a tremendous marketing strategy aimed as improving and calling more business from both our Hispanic community and our neighbors to the south. Further, it would most likely call attention to the multitude of travelers passing our area on Intestate 8 who might take more interest in our small town with a name like Paul Rodriguez Boulevard as a beacon.
The locals need to realize the changing economic dynamics. They need to re-evaluate and change with the times or they will definitely be left behind. As long as they only see us as Mexicans/Latinos/Hispanics or whatever they want to call us, they will not be able to deal with us on terms of equality.
The El Centro Chamber of Commerce needs to change its stand against this change and move into this new century with a strong determination to improve this area as it is and for what it is. We definitely need more Hispanic participation without the servitude philosophy of the status quo.
