Southwest remains atop IVL

Melissa Frausto scored the game-winning run on a Nikki Cordova single in the eighth inning to lead the Southwest High softball team to a 4-3 win over Imperial in Imperial Valley League action in El Centro on Tuesday.

Picking up the win for Southwest was Melissa Lerno, who pitched a complete game, giving up four hits, walking three and striking out seven.

Jessica Conway led the Eagles offensively with a two-run home run. Frausto scored twice and Cordova drove in two runs. Stephanie Garcia finished with two hits and P.J. Enders had a double for Southwest.

The win improves Southwest to 6-2 in the IVL and keeps it in sole possession of first place, while Imperial drops to 3-5.


Amy Holtz led the Imperial offense with a three-run home run in the fifth inning.

Lindsay Lugo took the loss for the Tigers, allowing eight hits and two earned runs.

Both teams host games at 4:15 p.m. Friday, with Southwest playing Holtville in El Centro and Imperial taking on Calexico.

Holtville 2, Brawley 1, 13 innings

HOLTVILLE — The Holtville High softball team needed 13 innings to get past Imperial Valley League rival Brawley Union High here Tuesday, beating it 2-1.

Josie Silva scored the game-winning run in the 13th on an error as Holtville improved to 5-3 in the IVL.

Lauren Huyler picked up the win, striking out 15 and allowing no earned runs. She also finished 3-for-6 with a double.

Michelle Strahm had two hits for the Vikings.

Leighan Sudduth took the loss for Brawley (3-5), pitching a complete game, giving up six hits, striking out six and allowing no earned runs.

Holtville plays at 4:15 p.m. Friday at Southwest in El Centro and Brawley hosts Palo Verde at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Palo Verde 2, Calexico 0

CALEXICO — The Calexico High softball team dropped to 1-7 in the Imperial Valley League with a 2-0 loss to Palo Verde here Tuesday.

Marisol Cuevas took the loss for Calexico, giving up five hits, striking out three and allowing one earned run. She had with one of the team's two hits.

Martha Ramirez recorded the Bulldogs' other hit.
