A 25-year-old El Centro man was arrested in his home Wednesday after he allegedly beat another man with his fists outside an am/pm mini-mart April 21.

After an investigation by El Centro police detectives, Luis Alfonso Castro was arrested in his home on the 300 block of Heil Avenue around 7:45 p.m. for the beating of 23-year-old John Lawrence Hernandez of El Centro.

According to El Centro police Lt. Tim Blankenship, Castro was jailed on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon causing great bodily harm.

Castro also was arrested on suspicion of drug possession after police found a small amount of methamphetamine in his wallet.

Blankenship said the beating of Hernandez happened about 2 a.m. April 21 at the am/pm at 1302 S. Imperial Ave. in El Centro.

For unknown reasons, Blankenship said, Hernandez and Castro started arguing inside the store. Hernandez left the store and was loading some items into the back of his vehicle when Castro allegedly crept from behind and punched him in the back of the head, knocking Hernandez unconscious, Blankenship said.

Castro then reportedly jumped on Hernandez while he was on the ground and unconscious and kept punching him, said Blankenship.

Witnesses had to pull Castro off Hernandez, after which Castro fled.

Blankenship said because of good detective work from Detective Luis Hernandez, police were able to obtain Castro's identity and an arrest warrant.

Castro is being held at the county jail with no bail set.
