Verizon kicking off World Cup event

May 02, 2002|STAFF REPORT

Verizon Wireless, the nation's largest wireless provider, announced $25,000 in grants to youth soccer leagues in El Centro and 24 other cities in the western United States as part of its celebration of the 2002 World Cup. The company's three-part World Cup celebration is titled "Onda Futbolera de Verizon Wireless," and includes youth soccer events, a game show and a sweepstakes.

Festivities begin in El Centro on Saturday at the grand opening of Verizon Wireless' newest retail store at 880 N. Imperial Ave. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Fiesta Mundialista will feature three hours of Latino music, soccer activities, prizes and giveaways. League members will demonstrate their soccer moves and Spanish-language radio and TV stations will participate with live broadcasts and appearances by on-air personalities.

Verizon Wireless will present a $1,000 check to a representative of the local soccer league Saturday at the El Centro store. Parents, family and friends of the soccer youths, as well as residents in the community, are invited to join in the fiesta.

"We are pleased to be a new neighbor and want to bring the excitement and fun of the World Cup to people in the Imperial Valley, Verizon Wireless' new service area," said Summer Wheelock, manager of Verizon Wireless' communications retail store in El Centro.

From noon to 2 p.m. June 1, part two of Onda Futbolera de Verizon Wireless begins at the El Centro store with a two-hour game show — "Mete un Golazo" — testing individuals' soccer and World Cup knowledge and rewarding winners with prizes. Contestants who are at least 18 years old will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis.

"Onda Futbolera, starting with Fiesta Mundialista, captures the energy around World Cup and celebrates youth soccer with entertainment, sports activities and much-needed cash that the leagues can use for things like uniforms and transportation," said Nick Montes, manager of ethnic marketing for Verizon Wireless.

Verizon Wireless recently expanded its service in Imperial County after acquiring certain business assets of Dobson Communications.
