The Nelons bringing back Southern Gospel

May 03, 2002

IMPERIAL — Southern Gospel singers The Nelons, who have been featured on the Gaither Homecoming video series, will be in concert at 7 p.m. Thursday at Faith Assembly of God, 320 S. J St.

The Valleywide event is being sponsored by participating churches, KGBA-FM radio and Faith Assembly.

The Nelons' 20-year legacy includes six DOVE awards, three Grammy nominations, several No. 1 songs on Christian radio charts, a New York Film Festival Bronze Award and several "Singing News" fan awards.

The group was founded by Rex Nelon and its first single, "The Sun's Coming Up," was one of the Top-20 songs of the year for 1978, 1979 and 1980. In the next 20 years The Nelons introduced such standards as "Come Morning," "We Shall Wear a Robe and Crown," "I'll Talk to the Father" and "We've Got to Get America Back to God." Their signature song, "O For A Thousand Tongues," features Rex's daughter Kelly Nelon and is most closely associated with the group.
