The city of El Centro has started a public information campaign to let Imperial Valley residents know Imperial Avenue will be closed for three days in June.

Steve Hogan, El Centro public works director, said the thoroughfare will be closed June 21, 22 and 23 so Union Pacific Railroad can replace the tracks and smooth its crossing just north of Euclid Avenue, near Vons and Big 5 Sporting Goods.

"The crossing will be completely closed," Hogan said.

The roadway is a major link between cities to the north, El Centro and Interstate 8 to the south. Hogan said there will be extensive signage routing north- and southbound truck traffic and out-of-town travelers onto Forrester Road and Dogwood Road. He said locals will find their own way around the closure, most likely using Eighth Street and La Brucherie Avenue. There also will be signs in Spanish and traffic officers on hand to route vehicles.

Hogan said particular points along Highway 86 can see as many as 25,000 vehicles daily.

The work will be paid for by Union Pacific.
