Pizza and clowns at El Dia del Niño

CALEXICO — It was their day on Tuesday, El Dia del Niño, and hundreds of kids reveled in it at a seven-hour celebration hosted by Calexico's Clincas De Salud Del Pueblo medical center.

There was pizza! Sixty pies from Papa John's worth.

There was a giant inflatable castle that kids bounced about in like balls in a lottery hopper.

There was dancing! There were clowns!

Clinic manager Bertha Jimenez said the event was a big success.

"There was no problems, everyone was safe and the kids got sodas and candies," she said.

It was the first time that a Dia del Niño celebration had been at Clinicas' Cole Road location. Normally the events are in Brawley. Jimenez said the Calexico event will definitely become a tradition.

She added the first event could not have been possible without the support from the Calexico Police Department, Lab-Corp, Perrone's Auto Stereos, Papa John's Pizza, Pfizer, Calexico Union Bank, Wal-Mart, 21st Century Community Program, D.J. Sonido Latino and Migrant Head Start program from El Centro and Calexico 10 theaters.

"The purpose of the event was to thank our pediatric patients and let them know we don't just care about their health issues," Jimenez said.
