Social science/history competition names winners

The Imperial County junior high social science/history competition has announced its winners from the March 20 competition in the Brawley Community Learning Center.

All seventh- and eighth-grade schools were eligible to enter a team in the countywide competition. Only one team per school per grade level was allowed to enter. Each team consisted of five members and an alternate.

The categories for the seventh-grade competition were early explorers, historical facts, famous people, significant dates and geographical data. The categories for the eighth-grade competition were state capitals, government, historical facts, famous people, significant dates and geographical data.

The students were able to gain points for their team during an individual skills test involving 10 questions. Each student took a map skills test worth one point for each question, which was than added to the overall team score.

The schools that participated were Barbara Worth Junior High School in El Centro, Frank Wright Intermediate School in Imperial, Kennedy Middle School in El Centro, Magnolia Elementary School in the Brawley area, Meadows School between Holtville and El Centro, Mulberry School in the Brawley area, Seeley School and Westmorland Elementary School.

The winners for the seventh-grade team competition were:

· First place — Magnolia Elementary School; coach, Blaine Smith; team members, Brett Mamer, Adam Cato, Travis Cox, Barrick Armstrong, Peter Rebik and Matt Reed

· Second place — Barbara Worth Junior High School; coach, Spencer Wavra; team members, Daniel Heredia, Corey Hanks, Ramon Robles, Alyssa Vasquez, Cheyanne Hewitt, Shabana Admani and Karen Kreider

· Third place — Kennedy Middle School; coach, Jesus Nuñez; team members, Lax Muralidhara, Isaac Acosta, Alex Troncoso, Anton Morales and Edgar Salcido

The winners for the eighth- grade team competition were:

· First place — Magnolia Elementary School; coach, Blaine Smith; team members, Valerie Smith, Vance Lyerly, Jillian Storm, Allison Smith and Justin Mamer

· Second place — Kennedy Middle School; coach, Bob Herbert; team members, Francisco Cabrera, Betsy Gomez, Ephraim Jacobo, Giovanni Garrido, Raul Duarte and Amy Sanchez

· Third place — Barbara Worth Junior High School; coach, Pat Rose; team members, Roxana Cubero, Justin Ngo, John Cardenas, Keith Topete, Mitchell Vernon, Maxx Webb and Joshua Hickingbottom
