Central trounces Imperial 11-2

Coming off a 5-1 loss to Palo Verde on Friday, the Central Union High baseball team bounced back with an 11-2 thumping of Imperial in El Centro to remain tied for first place in the Imperial Valley League.

Javier Vasquez led the Central offense, going 2-for-3 with three runs and two stolen bases. Raul Cazarez was 1-for-3 with two runs and an RBI and Mario Gastelum was 1-for-2 with two RBI for Central. Enrique Lechuga was 1-for-2 with two runs for the Spartans (7-2 IVL).

Leo Ibarra was the winning pitcher, going six innings, walking four and striking out two. Kevin Betz pitched an inning of relief for Central.

"Considering the place we're in and after that loss on Friday, we needed to come on strong today," said Central coach Dave Middleton. "We had a really good practice on Monday and I was feeling pretty good about our team after that.


"Our guys played with much more heart and enthusiasm and just wanted to win," said Middleton.

For Imperial (5-5), Kevin Williams finished with a triple and Chris Cabrera had a double. Both scored runs for the Tigers.

Aaron Hartsock took the loss, giving up four earned runs in the first inning.

Imperial's defense committed seven errors and Central's committed five.

Both teams play at 4:15 p.m. Friday, with Central hosting Holtville and Imperial playing at Brawley.

Brawley 6, Palo Verde 0

BLYTHE — The Brawley Union High baseball team remained in a tie atop the Imperial Valley League standings with a 6-0 victory over Palo Verde here Tuesday.

Brandon Burnett pitched a one-hitter with four strikeouts to pick up the win for the Wildcats (7-2 IVL). Burnett also finished 3-for-4 with two RBI.

David Santana was 2-for-3 with an RBI and stole home in the first inning and Dominic Aguirre went 1-for-2 with three runs for Brawley.

Calexico 3, Holtville 1

HOLTVILLE — J.P. Gonzalez scattered seven hits and struck out seven as the Calexico High baseball team got past Holtville 3-1 here Tuesday.

Gonzalez, who did not allow an earned run in his seven innings, also finished with a hit and a run.

Damien Lopez had an RBI single for the Bulldogs (4-6 IVL).

Edward Castro took the loss for Holtville (2-8 IVL) giving up six hits and three earned runs and notching eight strikeouts.

James Hawk scored the Vikings' run.

Calexico will play at Southwest in El Centro at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday.
