K.W. Karate qualifies 13 for nationals

ANAHEIM — The K.W. Karate/Tae Kwon Do Center of El Centro had a field day at the state tae kwon do Junior Olympics here last weekend, with 13 athletes qualifying for the national tae kwon do Junior Olympics.

Audriana Baro and Samantha Baro, both 12 years old, won in the forms events. Jorge Villalobos was the team's other gold medalist, in sparring.

Chris Morquecho and Lina Perez, both 13, took second place in sparring. Also taking second place in sparring were Jonathan Hill, 8, and Tanya Hudson, 10.

Taking third place in sparring for K.W. Karate were Robert Martinez, 7, Jesus Villegas, 9, and Nayra Martinez and Raquel Marchesini, both 12.


Sofia Marchesini, 10, took third place in the forms competition.

Darrel Manjarrez, 7, was the team's final qualifier, taking fifth place in the forms competition.

Competing for K.W. Karate but not placing or qualifying for nationals were Astor Marchesini, 7 and Ricky De Alba, 7, both in sparring. Joaquin Villegas, 6, also competed in the forms competition.

The national Junior Olympics will be in Minneapolis in July.

IVDA's Emanuel qualifies for SDI

POWAY — Imperial Valley Desert Aquatics swimmer Kristi Emanuel qualified for the San Diego/Imperial Junior Olympics here last weekend, finishing 21st in the 11-12-year-old 50-meter butterfly in 36.87 seconds in the A division of a Pacific Swim A/B Long Course meet.

Emanuel, 12, of Calipatria, took fourth place in the 100 freestyle in 1 minute, 16.23 seconds in the B division.

Stevie Wills, 12, of El Centro took fourth in the 50 breaststroke (42.47), fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:31.68) and eighth in the 200 individual medley in 2:53.39 in the A division.

The San Diego/Imperial Junior Olympics will be Aug. 23-25 in La Jolla.

Gladiator Liston qualifies for


CLOVIS — Brawley Gladiator junior wrestler Anthony Liston took fifth place in the 11-12-year-old novice 60-pound division at the freestyle state tournament last weekend to qualify for the regional meet.

Liston finished the tournament with a 3-0 record to qualify for the regionals June 17-22 in Butte, Mont.

Cru wins three

SAN DIEGO — The El Centro based Cru basketball team improved its season record to 15-3 with three wins here last weekend.

On Saturday the Cru beat the Clairemont Recreation All-stars 81-57, led by Andrew Grooms with 16 points. Michael Garcia added 12 points for the Cru in the win.

Later in the day, the Cru beat Francis Parker 74-50, with Anthony Rojas scoring 17 points and Robert Christensen adding 14.

The Cru wrapped up play with a 58-42 victory over the Running Rebels of National City. Christensen led with 14 points followed by Rojas with 11.

The Cru will compete in the Future Stars Tournament in Irvine May 17-19.
