detonate crudely

made acid bomb

Staff Writer

CALEXICO — This city's firefighters and the Imperial County bomb squad teamed up to safely detonate a crudely constructed acid bomb that someone had left near the 800 block of First Street.

Calexico police Sgt. Victor Legaspi said he initially spotted the two-liter bottle acid bomb on Saturday morning after responding to a 911 call concerning the explosive.

"I did see it laying on the ground. It appeared to have already expanded," he said.

Not knowing if the bomb was going to explode, Legaspi secured the area and called in the Fire Department and the bomb squad.

Legaspi said the bomb was made from a 2-liter bottle filled with a combination of combustible liquids and materials.

Anyone who spots such a concoction should immediately call the police.

This is at least the second such acid bomb found in the city in recent months. Legaspi didn't know if the incidents are connected.

He said the case is under investigation and the department has a lead it is following.
