Imperial responds, trashes junk

Special to this newspaper

IMPERIAL — Imperial residents had the opportunity to get rid of a lot of junk Friday and Saturday.

Valley Environmental Services in conjunction with the city of Imperial organized a trash pickup of bulk items not normally picked up by the regular trash collection.

Resident Faith Jimenez said, "I saw it in the newspaper, I think it's great. I get to get rid of all my junk."

"I think it's a good way to get the place cleaned up," said Jason Wilson.

Appliances such as hot water heaters, scrap metal and old sofas lined the streets.

One vehicle picked up the metal materials onto a flatbed while another crushed wood material and furniture much like a trash compactor.

Jose Frayre of Valley Environmental Services joked and said, "It's terrible."

Asked why, he said "Just look at all that junk!" but added, "It's understandable. It's the first time we do this here."

However, this event is not as unique as it might appear. Valley Environmental Services will pick up most bulk items all year long. All residents have to do is call and the company will pick up such items.
