California first lady Sharon Davis plans to visit the Imperial Valley on Thursday and Friday.

According to her staffers she'll be in Calexico around 4:45 p.m. for Calexico's 94th anniversary celebration, where she'll join Mexicali Mayor Jaime Diaz Ochoa in saluting Calexico's pioneers.

At 6 p.m. Thursday Davis will attend graduation ceremonies at San Diego State University-Imperial Valley campus in Calexico.

SDSU Director of Advancement John Renison said campus officials are thrilled Davis is visiting the Imperial Valley.

"We believe she will be a good person to visit the area from the Davis administration because of her interest in education," he said.

"She'd be a good person to convey the message of importance of education in Imperial County," he added.

She will give a 12-minute speech after the graduation ceremony starts shortly after 7 p.m.

Friday morning will find California's first lady at Southwest High School in El Centro, where she will present the school with a school library enrichment grant worth $5,000.

As part of a program known as the governor's book fund, the grant money is designed to put award-winning books in elementary, middle school and high school libraries throughout California.

"We're honored that Mrs. Davis will be visiting our school and the library grant is great acknowledgment of the hard work our school librarian, Gretchen Benson, has done over the years building the library here at Southwest and at Central Union High School," Southwest Principal Joe Evangelist said today.

From noon to 2 p.m. Friday at the Old Eucalyptus Schoolhouse Davis will attend a luncheon sponsored by the cities of El Centro and Imperial, Imperial County, CalEnergy and Imperial Valley College. The luncheon is invitation only.
