The trial against a 39-year-old El Centro man thought to be responsible for the fatal stabbing of 19-year-old Edward De La Cruz continued this morning with a readiness hearing.

A jury selection date will be set after the readiness hearing.

Salvador Serrato is accused of stabbing Harbor City man Edward De La Cruz on July 1 in the 200 block of East Olive Avenue in El Centro after the two engaged in an altercation, according to earlier reports.

De La Cruz, a former local resident, was in El Centro visiting relatives.

Serrato was arrested the morning of July 16 at a relative's home in the 300 block of Villa Avenue in El Centro after relatives told police he wanted to turn himself in.

Imperial County Deputy District Attorney Susana Salgado will be prosecuting the case. Attorney Eduardo Rivera of Calexico will be defending Serrato. The trial will be presided over by Superior Court Judge Juan Ulloa in the County Courthouse in El Centro.

Both Salgado and Rivera were not available for comment this morning.
