A 16-year-old boy was in Lopez's vehicle. He suffered minor injuries. Both he and Lopez were not wearing seat belts, according to the press release.
The impact caused Lopez to travel into the fast lane of the northbound lanes of La Brucherie, where she struck the front of the vehicle driven by Jessica Canon, 19, of El Centro, who was heading north on La Brucherie.
Canon suffered minor injuries. She was wearing her seat belt.
No arrests were made in the case. All five people injured in the accident were taken to El Centro Regional Medical Center. Information on their conditions was not available this morning.
In an unrelated incident, Highway Patrol officers arrested 35-year-old Guillermo L. Lizarraga of Mexicali for felony hit-and-run accident at the intersection of Highway 98 and Cole Road.
A press release stated Humberto Beltran, 41, of Mexicali was heading west on Highway 98 at a speed of about 45 mph and Lizarraga was turning left from Cole to highway 98.
Lizarraga failed to yield the right-of-way to Beltran, according to the CHP. Beltran's vehicle struck the rear of Lizarraga's truck, which was pulling a trailer. Beltran was driving a sedan.
Petra De Escobedo, 58, of Mexicali was a passenger in Beltran's vehicle.
Lizarraga did not stop at the scene and attempted to cross the border to Mexico.
Beltran followed him to the border, where he informed U.S. Customs inspectors and they detained Lizarraga until CHP officers arrived.
Escobedo and Lizarraga did not report any injuries. Beltran suffered minor pain and sought his own aid.
The accident is still under investigation. No bail amount had been set for Lizarraga as of this morning.
